Third Box

The form for Shrinking Rae's personal effects has three boxes. Notify next of kin. Transfer custody of biometric ID. Authorize release of personal effects.

I checked the first box in March, the week after. I checked the second box that same week, once GDA confirmed the next-of-kin contact record was current — a formality, since Rae's mother had already called twice asking what to do with the address on file. The third box has been open since March.

Today is August 20th. That is five months.

Brit came by the equipment room this morning for his canteen — the green one, still not his, still never corrected — and stopped at the coat hook by the door. Rae's jacket has hung there since the inventory in April, past due for a locker it doesn't have, because RE-08 does not officially exist as an assignable location and I have not been in a hurry to solve that problem either.

"You gonna box that or what," he said. Not unkind. He asked the way you ask about something you've stopped expecting an answer to.

I told him the form requires my signature confirming no further departmental hold, and that I hadn't filed it because I hadn't gotten to it. Both true. Neither the reason.

The reason is that the third checkbox is the only one of the three that is mine to check. The first two just confirm facts — a family notified, a record updated. The third is a decision. It says: this is finished, there is nothing more this office is keeping for her, release it. I can confirm facts on a Tuesday without thinking about them. I have not been able to make that particular decision stick past a Tuesday since March.

Brit didn't push. He took his canteen and left the jacket where it was. I don't think he was asking me to file it. I think he was asking if it still needed to hang there, which is a different question, and I didn't have an answer to that one either.

I pulled the form back out this afternoon. Read all three boxes again. Signed nothing.

Five months unfiled is not the same category as never filed. The distinction matters to exactly one person in this building, and she works in the equipment room. Not yet is different from no. It just takes longer to explain than a checkbox allows.

The jacket is still on the hook. I moved it two inches to the left so it isn't blocking the door.
